Artist Statement
Since 1990, I have been continuously creating drawings that are composed of brush-drawn line works as a life's work. This started out as a warm-up exercise before I officially started on a piece of work. Recently, I am starting to feel that there is a connection between these drawings and my current works. There is a famous music recording called “Automatic Writing”(1979) by American experimental composer Robert Ashley. It is said that he produced a combination of words and electronic sound for the first time in this recording. Music has always influenced my works; translating sound to images is a consistent theme in my practice. For this reason, this exhibition references the title of Robert Ashley’s recording, and I attempt to generate “Automatic Writing” through drawings. Elements of automatic writing are inherently rooted in my instincts; not thinking and freely drawing line works. This time, however, I have chosen to instill the drawings I have ceaselessly drawn for the last 30 years onto plaster surfaces through the employment of laser cutting methods. This series comprises 40 plaster surfaces, and together I present to you “Automatic Writing”. Alongside, I am also presenting works made using character letters that I have produced in recent years. I am also exhibiting paintings with plant motifs, as shown at Gallery Trax.
