MACCIU × Yonezawa-Dantsu
MACCIU × Yonezawa-Dantsu
Graphic designer MACCIU and Yonezawa-Dantsu ・ Takizawa-Kobo, a hand-woven carpet business run since 1966, produce together ‘dantsu’ art products
As a part of the new initiative coordinated by GAS AS INTERFACE, MACCIU, a graphic designer primarily active in the digital domain, designed the story and motifs while visualizing the sensation of touch and the intuition that comes with it. The ‘dantsu’ art product is hand-woven by craftsmen from Yonezawa-Dantsu ・ Takizawa-Kobo. By placing it on your seat or under your feet, you can enjoy the sensation of your entire body being supported by the dense wool. It can also be hung on the wall and admired as a work of art.
TITLE OF WORKS
‘Hands touching the heart’
I believe that touching something good produces a soothing feel that causes one to stop thinking. Sometimes I believe that the brain, which has been wondering too much about faraway objects that cannot be seen or grasped by hand, requires a rest in which it may cease thinking. Immerse yourself in the texture and color of the material in front of you and enjoy the sensations / embrace the momentary inspiration from the first touch / listen to your body's voice as it responds to the inspiration and becomes active. The design theme for this project is the importance of the senses, which are gradually developed by such touch.
WHAT IS ‘DANTSU’... ?
Dantsu is a dense hand-knotted carpet. The warp yarn is woven together with wool pile yarn, while the weft yarn and knotted yarn form the carpet's structure, which results in high density and strength. When looking at the reverse side, the design on the front side remains intact, demonstrating the carpets' remarkable thickness.

Yonezawa-Dantsu ・ Takizawa-Kobo
Yonezawa-Dantsu ・Takizawa-Kobo is a rug workshop in Yonezawa, in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture. Silk weaving has been an established trade in the area since the Yonezawa clan's reign. Hand-woven carpets can be pound strongly, making it difficult for hair to fall out and making them more durable. As a result, no backing or glue is required, and the front design is instantly transferred to the back. The same goes for Yonezawa-Dantsu. When we receive orders for complicated weaves or big scale carpets, we create our own looms and manufacture them ourselves. In recent years, we have aimed to make rugs with a 'pleasant touch'.
